As of today our Marchers are:
Melissa Darnell
Beth Payne
Shannon Payne
Dan Choi
Zoe Nicholson
(is there anyone else??)

DONORS:
Our angels who have donated are Lauren, Sally, Julie and we all but emptied our treasury.  There is still plenty of time to donate for hotel & airfare.  I know of two more people who would like to go but for the money.

There is much you can do, whether you are going or not.  You can post on twitter & facebook in support of the march.  You can write the OC Register & Daily Pilot about your chapter and the march.  You can have a rainbow picnic on Sunday October 11 and know that in spirit you are in D.C.

NOW endorses the National Equality March

NOW Endorses National Equality March
Statement of NOW President Terry O'Neill
September 21, 2009
The National Organization for Women is proud to endorse the grassroots National Equality March taking place in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 11, 2009. In the 21st century, it is simply outrageous not to have full equality under the law for all people, including women, lesbians and women of color -- and we have a moral obligation to change that.
Throughout history, the struggle for civil rights and social justice has changed the face of private and public institutions. Yet, discrimination remains rampant, particularly against lesbians. NOW recognizes that no woman will have full equality under the law until all women have full equality under the law.
Eliminating second-class rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people requires more than repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell and the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, currently casting shadows of inequality over the military and the institution of marriage. It requires more than passing the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would prohibit workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Our call for change must be bold and uncompromising -- political negotiation only assures that women get less than they deserve. Grassroots NOW activists from around the country will join the National Equality March to demand full equality for all women and all people.

Pacific Shore NOW Endorses The National March for Equality

NOW_Logo-rainbow-march

The NOW Sisterhood Coalition of Southern California is proud to endorse the National March for Equality.  This March represents two of our top three issues - Equality and LGBT Rights.  These four activist Chapters are not only endorsing but also attending the March for Equality in Washington DC, October 11, 2009.

We recognize that the time has come:

·         To recognize Marriage and all its privileges for pairs of adults, regardless of sex.

·         To end “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the Defense of Marriage Act.

·         To end the social stigma of LGBT, calling to eliminate the antiquated idea of separate but equal.

This Sisterhood Coalition is proud to state and stand by the principles that families are diverse.  We demand that LGBT families qualify for family insurance policies; are able to visit family members in hospitals; and inherit their mutually-created property. We want LGBT families to be able to adopt and rear children without harassment.  We want LGBT people to be the recognized and legally-enabled caretakers for one another in old age.

This Sisterhood Coalition is proud to state and stand by the principles that LGBT people have the right to openly serve in the military.  They want to serve and protect the safety of their families, our families, and the nation; they always have and always will.

This Sisterhood Coalition believes in equality under the law with all the rights and responsibilities that come with it. That is why we are marching in our Capital on October 11th, 2009. Those of us who can travel, walk, and ride will be there, but we will also be there for the thousands who are hiding, lost, and homeless - for youth, for seniors, for the isolated and the lonely who only wish they were in love, being loved, and planning to marry. On October 11th, each of us will march for more than ourselves.

Pacific Shore NOW ~ a sponsor of OC Pride

When is a picnic more than a picnic?  When it is activism.  When it is community.  When it is PRIDE.  If you look closely at this map, buried among the orange flags (indicating who donated in support of Prop8) you will find William R. Mason Park; site of OC PRIDE.  That is in Irvine, Orange County, California, USA, Earth.  Bring lemonade, sandwiches, the kids, the dog and make a Saturday afternoon something special.  At noon on August 15, you are invited to celebrate Equality.Prop9donors

If you saw the movie Milk or the Times of Harvey Milk or are as old as me, you know that Orange County was the home of John Briggs and one of the famous debates on Prop 6.  We named our airport after John Wayne, built a library for Richard Nixon, voted McCain/Palin, and are 1/3 Catholic, though mega-churches staking their claim, a la Rick Warren.  However, make no mistake, there are thousands of non-straights living and working here in the OC.

OC Pride began in 1988, when anti-gay slurs were not just on protestors’ signs but flown above; attached to a plane.  Over the years, peaking at 9,000 attendees, OC Pride  eventually lost steam and simply evaporated.  But the defeat of prop 8 spawned coalition building, protests and a whole new generation of activists.  Led by the Orange County Equality Coalition (OCEC), Orange County is OUT & PROUD.

Starting small, with an eye on competing with Long Beach, WeHo and San Diego in the future, OC is partying all day, Saturday, August 15 and everyone is invited.  Picnic at Mason Park in Irvine, After Party at Steelhead Brewery and know that you are a part of history.

June & July News

Dear Pacific Shore NOW,

So much news, great events and new members.

National NOW Elections

The slate I supported WON!  Geez, I almost never get to say that.

Terry O’Neil will be president and, to me, it means a return to grassroots activism.  Yipee!

NEW June members:

Joey Anetsberger

Lt. Dan Choi

Chrystal Ferber

Beth & Shannon Payne

Hope you will consider growing our chapter and give the gift of a membership.  It is a sliding scale of $40 – $15 and, at the very least it means they can get news about NOW and the movement.  Makes a nice Father’s Day present!

The Times of Harvey Milk is now available on YouTube!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZNGpB9A2js

You will note that there are a lot of women in the "Times of Harvey Milk.;" They were written out of "Milk". Harvey was a leader of everyone, for everyone, with everyone. He loved all people and worked side-by-side with women. Unity is the answer for all minorities.

Finally, if internal NOW politics is your thing ~

Pacific Shore NOW, Hollywood NOW, Long Beach & South Bay NOW and Palm Springs NOW closed the Grievance that was filed and accepted by National NOW against Shelly Mandell for her explicit support of Gov Sarah Palin on the Republican Presidential ticket.  Principally is was filed as this was in direct opposition to the National NOW PAC and NOW’s fundamental priority of Reproductive Freedom.  The matter was solved in mediation and never went to the full grievance process.  You can read more about it on my blog.  http://onlinewithzoe.com

So that is all the news for NOW!
